Starting a teaching career is exciting but challenging, especially in high-poverty and high-minority schools. In fact, a study by Richard Ingersoll found that 44% of new teachers leave within five years. RePublic Schools offers a comprehensive support system through our New Teacher Training (NTT) program to combat this.
New Teacher Training: A Foundation for Success
Our NTT program equips new teachers with the essential skills, resources, and guidance they need to thrive. Through year-long support, first- and second-year teachers join a network of mentors and colleagues, helping them build confidence and competence.
NTT focuses on three main areas:
- RePublic Teacher Mindsets: Success starts with the right mindset. New teachers learn core principles that define an effective, student-centered educator at RePublic.
- Lesson Preparation and Teaching Essentials: The RePublic Teacher Rubric provides teachers with strategies for creating engaging lessons and driving student achievement.
- Building Belonging: A strong school culture supports teachers and students. Our program teaches strategies to create classrooms where all students feel valued and motivated.
Aligning TLAC and GBF for Practical Success
Our program blends the high-impact methods of Teach Like a Champion 3.0 (TLAC) with the structured coaching from Get Better Faster (GBF). This approach provides clear, consistent development support throughout the year. Here’s how:
- Classroom Routines and Management: TLAC and GBF emphasize establishing routines and managing behavior from the start.
- Student Engagement: Techniques like TLAC’s “Cold Call” and GBF’s structured coaching keep students engaged.
- Ongoing Feedback: GBF’s coaching cycles offer regular feedback, helping new teachers apply TLAC strategies for continuous growth.
Building a Strong Community for New Teachers
NTT also fosters community. Through peer connections, new teachers share experiences, seek advice, and celebrate milestones together. This network is crucial, offering support and encouragement that boosts teacher satisfaction and retention.
At RePublic, investing in new teachers is essential for the future of our students and our organization. With high-quality training, targeted coaching, and a strong support network, we are preparing our teachers to thrive—and stay in the field for years to come.
