Smilow Prep leader brings charter school perspective to Mississippi’s inaugural mathematics initiative!

We are proud to celebrate Assistant Principal Geneen Russell of Smilow Prep, who was recently selected to participate in the Mississippi Department of Education’s inaugural Mathematics Coaching Cohort. This year-long initiative brings together a select group of instructional leaders from across the state for intensive professional learning focused on advancing math instruction and strengthening teacher development.

Grounded in MDE’s coaching model and statewide math priorities, the cohort meets monthly and provides thought partnership, powerful resources, and actionable strategies that participants can bring back to their schools immediately. Already, Ms. Russell has begun sharing new approaches and tools with Smilow’s math teachers, helping to drive real-time impact in classrooms. From lesson planning supports to strategies for deeper student engagement, these takeaways are shaping instruction in meaningful ways.

What makes this opportunity especially significant is that Ms. Russell is the only representative from Mississippi’s charter school sector. Her selection highlights the strong leadership and instructional expertise within Smilow Prep and the broader RePublic network.
