At Smilow Prep, nurturing leadership, civic responsibility, and real-world learning is the standard. The Student Government Association (SGA) exemplifies this mission. Recently, under the guidance of advisors Henry Jones and Senethia Ingram, SGA leaders visited the Hinds County Chancery Court. This experience provided them with a firsthand look at the legal system, deepening their understanding of justice, public service, and civic engagement.
The SGA members, along with advisors Jones and Ingram, organized the trip. During the visit, they explored the courtrooms and offices, guided by The Honorable Tametrice Hodges. As a result, they learned about the different sections of the court system and the distinctions between Chancery and Criminal courts. This experience broadened their understanding of the legal process and sparked an interest in careers in law and public service.
Moreover, the visit had a lasting impact on the students. It offered hands-on learning beyond the classroom. They discovered the various roles within the judicial system, which fostered a greater appreciation for the courts’ role in maintaining justice. Additionally, understanding the differences between Chancery and Criminal courts helped them grasp the complexities of the law and its effects on families and communities. This personal perspective on courthouse work is difficult to achieve through traditional classroom learning.
Seven students participated, engaging actively and asking insightful questions. Consequently, this event supports the school’s mission to promote community engagement and enhance students’ educational experiences. By exploring the legal system, the students saw how knowledge of the law can impact both personal and societal outcomes. It also reinforced the school’s core value of developing responsible citizens who understand their role in the community.
Ultimately, this excursion helps advance the school’s work with scholars and families. It raises awareness of the public systems that shape their lives and fosters a sense of civic responsibility. Engaging with legal professionals encouraged students to think critically about their future contributions to society. In the end, this event highlights how real-world learning can inspire future leaders who are ready to make a difference.
