At RePublic Schools, it is essential to uplift the voices of our scholars and staff, share the stories that change lives, and highlight the connection that allows us to advance our mission of love, achievement, and anti-racism. In the Our Voice, Our Story, Our Connection series, you will hear from scholars, staff, and school leaders about why they continue to choose RePublic each day.
We were able to catch up with Ms. Rasaan Powell, Assistant Principal of Operations at Smilow Prep, to hear her story and how she has impacted the lives of our scholars and RePublic Schools.
Ms. Powell, please tell us a little about your background with RePublic Schools.
Presently, I am entering my sixth year with RePublic Schools. I started as the Dean of Students for upper middle school at Smilow Prep, where I actively contributed for 1.5 years. After that, I transitioned to my current roles as Athletic Director and Assistant Principal of Operations. Throughout my time at Smilow Prep, I’ve had the opportunity to work under various leaders, and what remains consistent is our collective commitment to doing what’s best for our students. I am excited about our ongoing efforts to ensure that every scholar is equipped with the tools they need to succeed in their chosen career or college path.
What keeps you motivated to lead in love, achievement, and anti-racism?
I lead with love, achievement, and anti-racism because I deeply care for our students and firmly believe that every child deserves a high-quality education, regardless of their socioeconomic background. As a natural competitor, I drive everyone—students, leaders, and parents alike—to strive for excellence, my favorite core value. Additionally, the commitment of our network to recognize and embrace anti-racism inspires me and fuels my dedication to fostering an equitable and inclusive environment for all.
Our Voice
Without a doubt, I passionately advocate for ensuring that Black and Brown children receive a high-quality education. I am committed to standing up for what is right and believe it is essential to address the needs of all students to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued. Speaking out enables us to advocate for positive change and continually enhance our practices.
Our Connection
Furthermore, our connection unites us all for the greater good. We foster meaningful relationships with scholars, team members, and the broader community by building trust through consistent communication, creating inclusive spaces, engaging in collaborative activities, offering support and encouragement, and promoting shared experiences. Undoubtedly, these connections help us align with our shared goals and values by enhancing collaboration, promoting a unified vision, building a supportive network, encouraging engagement and ownership, and strengthening community ties. Nonetheless, we are one team, one network, united by a shared vision.
