Experience RePublic: Our Voice, Our Story, Our Connection

At RePublic Schools, it is essential to uplift the voices of our scholars and staff, share the stories that change lives, and highlight the connection that allows us to advance our mission of love, achievement, and anti-racism. In the Our Voice, Our Story, Our Connection series, you will hear from scholars, staff, and school leaders about why they continue to choose RePublic each day.

We had the opportunity to talk with Ms. Kristen Williams, Principal of Smilow Collegiate. In our discussion, she shared her personal story and how she impacts scholars daily with her leadership.

Tell us a little about your background with RePublic Schools.

I began working at RePublic Schools in June 2024, drawn by the organization’s core values align closely with my beliefs about education, equity, and student success. What motivates me is the chance to lead with love, ensuring every scholar feels seen, valued, and supported.

Achievement also drives me, as I believe in setting high expectations and equipping scholars with the tools to reach their full potential. Witnessing their growth reinforces my commitment to this work, and seeing my teachers develop amplifies my passion for education.

Furthermore, anti-racism is crucial to my leadership because education can dismantle systemic barriers. I am committed to creating an environment where all scholars, regardless of background, can access the opportunities they deserve. For me, leading through love, achievement, and anti-racism is a responsibility I embrace daily. I bring a unique combination of experience in education, leadership, and program evaluation, which enables me to approach challenges in a strategic and student-centered manner. Having taught across all grade levels and designed and analyzed educational programs, I understand how interventions impact student performance, particularly in math.

This background shapes my role by ensuring decisions are based on data and empathy. I aim to balance high expectations with the necessary support systems to create an environment where scholars feel empowered to succeed. Additionally, my interactions with colleagues focus on collaboration and shared accountability, as strong teams yield positive student outcomes.

Ultimately, my perspective allows me to bridge strategy and execution, ensuring that policies and initiatives translate into meaningful, positive experiences for both scholars and staff.

Our Story

Understanding and sharing our collective stories is vital for building a strong, inclusive community within our school network. Our stories shape our identities and perspectives. As we listen and share, we foster deeper connections, trust, and belonging.

Hearing diverse stories allows scholars to see themselves in others, broadening their perspectives and reinforcing their sense of belonging in a supportive community. This practice empowers them in their own narratives.

For educators and staff, sharing experiences creates common ground and strengthens our commitment to the work. It reminds us that we are here to uplift, challenge, and support one another in service to our scholars. By embracing our collective stories, we cultivate a culture where love, achievement, and anti-racism become ideals and daily practices that shape how we learn, lead, and grow together.

Our Connection

I build meaningful connections with scholars, team members, and the broader community by being intentional in my interactions and actively listening. This ensures that everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

First, with scholars, I focus on building trust through consistent engagement. I celebrate their successes and support them during challenges. By understanding their aspirations and struggles, I reinforce their sense of capability and worth.

Next, I promote a culture of collaboration and shared accountability among team members. I recognize their strengths and seek to uplift their growth. Through open communication and collective problem-solving, we stay aligned with our mission.

Additionally, I consider families and stakeholders essential partners in education. I foster transparency and invite their participation, helping families feel connected and invested in their child’s journey.

In summary, these connections form the foundation of our shared goals and values. They create an environment where love, achievement, and anti-racism are daily practices that shape our teaching, learning, and growth. Ultimately, when we work in unity, we enhance our ability to create transformational opportunities.
