At RePublic Schools, it is essential to uplift the voices of our scholars and staff, share the stories that change lives, and highlight the connection that allows us to advance our mission of love, achievement, and belonging. In the Our Voice, Our Story, Our Connection series, you will hear from scholars, staff, and school leaders about why they continue to choose RePublic each day.
We had a chance to speak with Mr. Matthew Ochoa, the Chief Financial Officer for RePublic Schools. During our conversation, he shared his story and the significant influence charter schools have had on his life.
Tell us a little about your background with RePublic Schools.
I joined RePublic Schools in November 2024. However, my commitment to charter schools runs deep, as I have worked in charter school finance since 2007. Growing up in a single-parent, low-income household in Massachusetts, I struggled to thrive in my neighborhood school. Fortunately, when my mom enrolled me in a new charter school from 5th–12th grade, I finally found the challenge and growth I needed—academically, socially, and emotionally. This transformative experience continues to drive me to give back by helping charter schools maximize the impact of their limited financial resources. Ultimately, my goal is to ensure that all students, regardless of background, have the opportunities they deserve.
Our Voice
Importantly, my experience as a charter school student profoundly shapes how I approach my work. Having been on the other side, I know what it feels like to not have the support you need, and I understand the power of showing up for students meaningfully. Therefore, I am committed to prioritizing the experiences of all students, ensuring that their voices and needs are heard and valued equitably. As someone new to this organization, I am determined to lean into this approach from the start. I want to make sure that everyone—scholars, caregivers, staff, board members, and authorizers—can see this commitment reflected in my recommendations, my work, and the way I show up in every space.
Our Story
Shortly after joining RePublic, I learned of a scholar’s passing and how the school supported the family and honored the scholar’s memory. This response truly demonstrated how RePublic lives its values—especially love. Although I hope we never face this again, I am confident that RePublic will always support our community in such times.
Our Connection
One powerful way to enhance collaboration and communication is by transforming the budget development process. While each school may have unique needs, the core goal of creating a budget that serves every student remains the same. To that end, by openly discussing the assumptions and circumstances driving each school’s budget, we ensure alignment and create a space for collective growth. Moreover, this transparency allows us to challenge our assumptions, address any blind spots or biases, and build a stronger, more unified approach that genuinely meets the needs of all students.
