At RePublic Schools, it is essential to uplift the voices of our scholars and staff, share the stories that change lives, and highlight the connection that allows us to advance our mission of love, achievement, and anti-racism. In the Our Voice, Our Story, Our Connection series, you will hear from scholars, staff, and school leaders about why they continue to choose RePublic each day.
We were able to catch up with Ms. McKay Cauthen, Lead History Teacher at Liberty Collegiate Academy, to hear her story and how she uses her voice to support and lead our scholars.
Ms. Cauthen, please tell us a little about your background with RePublic Schools.
I started at Liberty in the 2018-2019 school year, and this is the start of my seventh year in the RePublic Schools Network. The families and relationships I have formed keep me coming back and motivated. I want every student who walks through the doors of our network to leave prepared and ready to succeed, whatever obstacles come their way.
Our Voice
How do you believe your voice contributes to the collective voice of our school network, and why is it essential to be heard?
Our voices matter, and the way we communicate our needs is important. I have used my voice to ensure students receive a well-rounded education in our network. I ensured my voice was heard in our network to ensure history received the attention it deserved. Scholars in my school achieved the highest data ever recorded! Scholars deserve teachers who are passionate about their subjects and put in the work to ensure that they achieve the greatness that is inside of them.
Our Story
Can you share a memorable moment or experience that exemplifies the spirit of our school network and explain how it impacted you personally? How does understanding and sharing these collective stories shape our community?
When we are able to be share our stories in safe spaces, we are able to use our voices collectively to work together in those spaces to make improvements that work for that space. It builds a strong culture and community that is focused on growing together. Liberty has always benefited from working together and putting the community first. When we do it together, we go farther together.
Our Connection
How do you foster meaningful connections with scholars, fellow team members, and the broader community? How do these connections support our shared goals and values?
I try to connect with everyone in our network by allowing the other party to feel listened to and heard. I make meaningful connections with people by just getting to know them and asking questions about their interests and passions. I typically check in on anyone I meet and see if they need anything to show that I care about them. By investing in all stakeholders, we create a well-loved community that knows that we are there for them. It also helps us grow and achieve together because we are all invested.
