Experience RePublic: Our Voice, Our Story, Our Connection
At RePublic Schools, it is essential to uplift the voices of our scholars and staff, share the stories that change lives, and highlight the connection that allows us to advance our mission of love, achievement, and anti-racism. In the Our Voice, Our Story, Our Connection series, you will hear from scholars, staff, and school leaders about why they continue to choose RePublic each day.
We were able to catch up with Ms. Pam Cannon, M.S., an ELA III and Creative Writing Teacher at RePublic High School, to hear her story and how she has positively influenced our scholars and RePublic Schools.
Ms. Cannon, please tell us a little about your background with RePublic Schools.
My name is Pam Cannon, and I teach ELA. I came to Republic High School in the summer of 2022 after spending 18 years in state government. Before my time in government, I taught for three years. I consider my return to the classroom and my placement at Republic a “God Move” because, out of the blue, it was placed in my spirit to return to the classroom. As a teacher, I am motivated to lead with love, achievement, and anti-racism. I believe in creating an inclusive and supportive environment where every student feels valued and empowered to reach their fullest potential, fostering a community that celebrates diversity and strives for equity.
Our Story
My voice contributes to our school network by sharing experiences and ideas that promote a culture of inclusivity and excellence. I bring a focus on equity and support that enriches our collective efforts. Since my tenure at Republic, I have sponsored the school’s Black Student Union Club. Through this student-led club, we have organized many different informational events that encouraged all of our school’s demographics to attend. It’s essential to be heard to ensure that all perspectives are considered in our decision-making, leading to a more supportive and effective educational environment.
Our Voice
Memorable moments that exemplify the spirit of our school network occurred during our daily morning prayer time among staff and admin who wished to participate. One morning, following the tragic loss of a student to gun violence, we gathered not just as colleagues but as a family united in grief and support. Although I was unfamiliar with the slain scholar, we, as a school family, prayed with the family of that scholar, shared memories, and later, staff and students came together to honor the student’s memory through a heartfelt tribute. This moment deeply impacted me, showcasing the strength and compassion of our school and reinforcing the importance of unity and support in times of hardship.
Our Connection
We can enhance collaboration by scheduling regular meetings for staff to share ideas and updates. Creating a central online platform for communication will keep everyone connected and informed. Encouraging open dialogue and team-building activities will strengthen our sense of community and support.
