Why We Celebrate – A understanding of Women’s History Month and why we celebrate.

March is Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of women throughout history. This month provides an opportunity to reflect on the struggles women have faced in the past and continue to face today, and to honor the trailblazers who have made significant contributions to our society.

The origin of Women’s History Month dates back to 1981 when Congress passed a resolution requesting then President Ronald Regan to proclaim the week of March 7th as Women’s History Week. The week was chosen to coincide with International Women’s Day, which has been observed since the early 1900s. In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to the entire month of March, and since then, Women’s History Month has been recognized every year.

The purpose of Women’s History Month is to highlight the often-overlooked contributions of women to our society. Throughout history, women have made significant contributions in fields such as politics, science, technology, medicine, and the arts. Despite their achievements, women have faced discrimination, marginalization, and exclusion from many aspects of society. Women’s History Month seeks to raise awareness of these issues and promote gender equality.

At RePublic, we believe that Women’s History Month is particularly important when it comes to DEI work. DEI stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and it is an essential aspect of creating a fair and just society. Women have historically been underrepresented in many areas of society, including leadership roles, STEM fields, and politics. By highlighting the contributions of women to our society, Women’s History Month helps to promote diversity, and equity and encourages the inclusion of women in all areas of society.

In addition to promoting gender equality, Women’s History Month also provides an opportunity to recognize the intersectionality of women’s experiences. Women come from diverse backgrounds and face unique challenges based on factors such as race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. By recognizing the diversity of women’s experiences, Women’s History Month helps to create a more inclusive and just society.

Women’s History Month is an important time to celebrate and recognize the achievements of women throughout history. By promoting gender equality and diversity, Women’s History Month helps to create a more equitable and just society. It is essential to continue to celebrate Women’s History Month and to work towards a future where all women have equal opportunities and recognition for their contributions.
